Why we start with absorption.
The reasoning behind our work.
When we see an underweight child or a struggling mother, our first instinct is almost always the same: there isn't enough food. Sometimes that's exactly right. But there's another part of malnutrition that's rarely understood, and rarely addressed, and it's the part Vaishnavi Trust exists to fix.
Eating is only the first step. Once food is consumed, the body must digest it, absorb the nutrients, and use them for growth, repair and good health. When this process works well, nutrition reaches where it is needed most, helping children grow and mothers stay healthy.
When this process is disrupted, as it often is after years of poor gut health, repeated illness and poor living conditions, the body cannot absorb and use the nutrients it receives.
Food goes in. Too little is absorbed.
Food and supplements are consumed.
The body digests and absorbs the nutrients.
The nutrients support growth, health and development.
What is Hidden Hunger?
Hidden hunger occurs when this process breaks down. Even when food and supplements are available, the body cannot digest, absorb or use enough of the nutrients it receives.
The child continues to be undernourished. The mother remains anaemic. The plate may be full, but the body is still deprived of the nutrition it needs.
Across India, government nutrition programmes are reaching millions of women and children with food and supplements. This progress matters. But nutrition can only improve health if the body is able to digest, absorb and use it. That is the gap we focus on.
But providing food is only part of the solution. If the body cannot digest, absorb and use the nutrients it receives, even good nutrition cannot achieve its full impact. That is the gap we work to close.
Hidden hunger cannot be addressed with food or supplements alone. It requires an integrated approach that restores the body's ability to digest, absorb and use nutrients.
Our multidisciplinary team of doctors from Siddha, Ayurveda, Allopathy and Nutrition has developed two evidence-informed protocols. They combine traditional knowledge with modern medicine to improve gut health and absorption before strengthening nutrition through wholesome food and regular follow-up.
When the body is ready to use nutrition, food can truly do what it is meant to do—help children grow, mothers stay healthy and babies get a stronger start in life.
In short: we don't replace the nutrition reaching families. We make sure their bodies can keep it.
The same improvement, lasting a lifetime.
Across both our programmes, the same idea holds: we help mothers and children digest, absorb and assimilate nutrition, resetting the gut so the food they already have finally does its work. That is how a single improvement compounds across a lifetime, and across generations.
Vaishnavi Trust works in alignment with India's national health and nutrition priorities. Our programmes complement flagship initiatives by addressing the absorption gap, helping ensure that mothers and children benefit fully from the nutrition they already receive. By working through the community's existing health network and trusted frontline workers, we strengthen the public system, never replace it. Our work contributes directly to SDG 2 and SDG 3, and to the vision of a healthier Viksit Bharat 2047.
